How do you keep your keys safe?

Key storage can prove to be quite a problem. Although with advances in technology there is an increasing move away from physical keys to electronic access keys like magnetic cards, there are still circumstances where you need to protect your keys from falling into the wrong hands. Depending on the number of keys and the nature of the business, there are several ways available to not only protect keys from unauthorised access, but also to keep records.

Key lockers

A key locker is an easy way to store keys. Such lockers tend to be designed for small numbers of keys of minor importance. They are used for rooms where there is security, monitoring and generally no one expects their strength to be tested.

Key lockers are classless, have a single-wall, lightweight construction and are fitted with cylinder locks. The lowest price decides in this category, which is in the area of several hundred zloty.

These lockers can be mounted fearlessly on the wall, where they will be easily accessible to all users of the rooms or vehicles in question.

Key safes

A key safe sounds much more serious, although the simplest safes differ from lockers mainly in terms of bolts on the door and a certified lock. However, key safes can also be much sturdier, especially in cases where losing a key would actually be a serious problem.

A good example of storing keys in a robust burglar-proof safe is car dealerships, where it is not so much the record-keeping as the security against unauthorised persons that is of paramount importance.

A key safe has a door equipped with multi-sided locking.

Is it worth having a key safe? You will find the answer in the text with this very title.

Key depositories

A key depository has a slightly different purpose. Most often, it takes the form of a cabinet hanging on the wall, less often it is simply a board with prongs. The depository is used to store keys, but does not protect against physical break-ins. Instead, it is excellent for record keeping and control.

Similar to safes fitted with an electronic lock, the depository has access control. The user is identified by a PIN and/or proximity card and, based on this, the key that the user can retrieve is highlighted. A steel catch is also released so that the keys are made available.

The retrieved keys can be returned to any slot or to the one from which they were retrieved. This depends on the configuration, and the entire device is managed via a dedicated web application.

Which key safe or depository to choose?

When choosing a particular model, you need to answer several questions, the most important of which are:

• Is the key storage function to protect against key theft or is it for record-keeping? Or are both functions needed?

• How many keys do you want to store? Lockers and safes designed to store keys are rarely chosen in large sizes, but consider the size of the keys

• Where do you want to place the key locker/safe or depository? Key safes can be positioned in many places, but the most common choice is an easily accessible wall.

• How do you want to open and close the locker? Electronic PIN code locks are available and, in the case of depositories, there is also a card reader. An electronic lock is easy to use and reliable.
