Since Halloween came to us in the 1990s, it has become very popular. The holiday, which is associated with distinctive jack-o-lanterns made from a hollowed-out pumpkin, is not only loved by children. It is also loved by entrepreneurs, because there is a lot of money to be made from fear. Americans spend around 7 billion dollars on this holiday[i], buying sweets, costumes, decorations and various gadgets. What's more, as much as one tenth of annual candy sales in the United States are generated during the last week of October.

Halloween – a "scary" way to make money

Mass culture, including cinema and, for example, horror houses popular in the west, make money on Halloween. These horror houses are also appearing in Polish cities and are gradually becoming as popular as escape rooms. Halloween, which can without exaggeration be called a festival of consumption, can effectively overshadow other events. And not only the Christian celebration of All Saints' Day, All Souls' Day or the Mexican Day of the Dead. However, in opposition to Halloween, there is also a completely different event. This is World Saving Day, which is also celebrated on October 31st.

World Saving Day

World Saving Day is a holiday that was created a hundred years ago by representatives of European banks. The idea of the holiday is to promote saving as a way of stable development that will allow society to become systematically richer. To this end, various organisations, such as the Leopold Kronenberg Banking Foundation, run financial education programmes and campaigns promoting rational management of financial resources. Although World Saving Day is a relatively unknown tradition in Poland, it is still gaining supporters. What is more, our own celebrations related to finance are also emerging. One such event is the National Debt Free Day.

National Debt-Free Day

Soon after October's Halloween and World Saving Day, as early as 17th of November, we celebrate National Debt Free Day. It's a day that aims to highlight the nature of the debt problem in Poland and encourage people to make an effort to get rid of their arrears. This is very important, because only 7% of our countrymen save regularly, while as many as 6 times more people live on credit. The majority have credit card debts, take out loans and consumer credit, buy by instalments, and a huge number of people are paying off their mortgage. Although everyone knows that life without debt is easier, people in debt do not know how to get out of financial problems. Hence the need to promote initiatives such as the Debt Free Day.
