Are you looking to buy a safe or already have one and are wondering how to change the code? It doesn't have to be a difficult or time-consuming operation. However, you need to keep a few basic things in mind so that you don't end up temporarily locking the device.

1. Open door

There is no shortage of advocates of combination safes, as they guarantee better security than key-locked models. The manufacturer provides a code in the documentation, which usually consists of 3-8 digits. This should be checked with the safe door open.

Please refer to the user manual for information on making modifications. Modifications may void the warranty. It does not matter whether you have a few days, weeks or months left before the warranty expires. It is true that you can later apply for partial recovery, but under certain conditions. Proof of purchase will certainly be required.

2. Selecting a code

You should never set a code that is too simple. For example, a birthday, name day, wedding date, telephone number, car number or just a few digits. Sometimes manufacturers do not allow you to set it with just zeros.

It is advisable to choose a new code before the change procedure. Setting it during this operation may take too long and cause a nervous situation. In the case of selected safe models, it is necessary to quickly enter the new code and perform a specific action, e.g. turn the handle or confirm the change. Unsuccessful attempts may result in the encryption being interrupted or the device being temporarily locked.

3. A fortress of ciphers

There are safe models in which it is not possible to remove the factory code. However, this does not preclude you from setting your own combination of a few digits and then modifying it as necessary. In addition, there is also the option of gaining temporary access with a few-digit PIN, as well as changing or deleting it. In addition, there are models on the market where an administrator code and, for example, up to 6 different user codes can be set.

4. The moment of truth

If the electronic safe is equipped with batteries, changing the code can be done quickly and efficiently. With many models, the "0" button must first be pressed once or more. Sometimes a button on the back of the door is used for this.

The user is then asked to enter the valid code as standard. If the code is correct, this will be confirmed by a corresponding light (LED) or acoustic signal. The next step is to enter the new code. This often needs to be confirmed. Incorrect or correct completion of this operation will be signalled accordingly.

5. Under control

Safe owners should remember to change the batteries. When they are relatively weak, the user will notice this on the display or the LEDs will indicate this, e.g. by glowing yellow. Manufacturers do not recommend the use of rechargeable (so-called rechargeable batteries) and non-alkaline batteries.

Removing the power source will not remove the codes. All ciphers should be kept in a safe place and it is also recommended that any modification is recorded in the user manual.
