Is every criminal a well-prepared burglary specialist who operates under cover of darkness? On the contrary – residential buildings are most often burglarized by common thieves who use simple tools for this purpose. They take not only cash, but all valuable items that can be cashed in. Check what myths about burglaries you should not believe.
There is no need to fear a burglary on a guarded housing estate
On the new housing estates there are a series of burglaries committed by burglars prepared to force through serial locks installed in the doors, which are bought in bulk by the developer. On the other hand, in houses on the outskirts of cities criminals are able to bypass complex security measures and look for their weakest link, which turns out to be e.g. a small cellar window or a garage door. Burglaries usually happen during the day, when people are at work or school.
I do not keep cash at home, so I am not at risk of burglary
Cash and jewellery are the most attractive targets for burglars. However, this doesn't mean that if you don't keep it at home, a burglary can't happen. Criminals are happy with anything that can be sold and receive even a fraction of the value for these items. This applies above all to electronics, i.e. laptops, tablets and smartphones. TVs are less frequently stolen due to their size. However, well-prepared thieves may be tempted to take documents, e.g. passports or even valuable family heirlooms.

Thieves operate under the cover of darkness
In fact, night-time burglaries are more common in commercial establishments and shops than in residential homes. Burglars prefer to act in the daytime, when people are at work or on a weekend or longer trip. They want the robbery to be quick, silent and invisible. What is worse, some criminals are not even deterred by the presence of property owners. However, it is worth remembering that as many as 1/3 of all robberies can be thwarted only by using appropriate security technology.
Alarm and monitoring are enough to deter a thief
Burglary is a very dynamic activity. A skilled burglar needs only a few minutes to break through security, take valuables and flee the scene. For such an offender, who is additionally disguised, monitoring will not be an obstacle. The same is true of petty criminals, who often do not rationally assess the level of danger of their actions. These are burglars who use common tools and cause a lot of damage by breaking doors or windows. However, an alarm system and monitoring can be effective when combined with the use of other robust security features, for example: burglar proof doors with certified locks, windows, roller shutters and a safe. Good lighting around the property is also important to ensure that the perpetrator can be spotted quickly.
Ground floor flats are the most vulnerable to burglary
A ground floor flat is very easy for a thief, but if it is properly secured, e.g. with roller blinds, doors and burglar-proof windows, it may not be attractive to criminals who use simple forceful methods during burglaries. They are more likely to target properties with ajar windows or balcony doors, through which it is easy to get inside. All you need for this is a screwdriver and a little force.
Robust security and a safe draw unnecessary attention
It is good to know that the more valuable your possessions, the more robust the security measures you should use. You should always be discreet when installing them. If you take care to ensure that your security devices are in good working order, that they are armed and that you keep your most valuable items and documents in a solid safe, you will significantly increase your security. Otherwise, we knowingly expose ourselves to large financial losses.
