A mechanical watch is said to have a soul and is a symbol of prestige. It also has special storage requirements. In order to ensure trouble-free operation of an automatic-winding watch, a watch winder is necessary. What is this device and why should you have a safe with watch winders if you have a minimum of two mechanical watches?
Mechanical watches can either be hand-wound or have an automatic winding. This mechanism works by tensioning the springs by means of an inertial system thanks to the movement of the hand on which the watch is worn. If it is worn, it is automatically wound. The problem arises when we have at least two watches. When we wear one, the other waits. Usually, the winding allows energy to accumulate and the watch - even if not worn - will work for 36-48 hours. After that it will stand and have to be winded again (although there are models that wind automatically and the wearer only has to correct the time).
In theory, there would be nothing wrong with this - well, at most it will stand and you will set it later. Unfortunately, in some automatic watches after more than a month of non-use (and with several owned devices such a break may happen) the oil and lubricants inside may dry out and deteriorate the mechanism. It is therefore advisable to keep the watch moving, even if it is not being worn. The rotator provides us with this.

What is a watch winder?
It's a specially designed device that makes watches with automatic winding move gently – just as if they were on your wrist. The watch winder simply rotates the whole watch and thus sets the pendulum in motion. As a result, even when you are not wearing the watch, it is being wound (and the lubricants do not thicken). Watch winder can be mains or battery powered. They can also have different modes of operation (winding, pausing), but regardless of the type of rotator, they are designed to keep your mechanical watch in good shape.
Watch winder can be sold as small boxes or cases with space for several watches. However, if you have more valuable models in your collection, it is definitely safer to invest in a specialised safe to store such devices.
Safes with a rotary mechanism
These are exclusive safes belonging to specialised lines of safe manufacturers, which are primarily intended for storing watches. They may only have stands equipped with rotomats, but most often they are also equipped with several additional drawers and compartments where other valuables (as well as watches that do not require winding) can be stored. Because these are safes for a discerning clientele, they are virtually always extremely elegant and finely finished. An example of such a high-end safe is the Gold Rush model from Hartmann Tresore's Signature Safes collection in pearl gold, lined inside with walnut wood and velvet and equipped with 24 rotomats and 3 shelves. Luxury safes with rotomats are usually finished with wood, leather and sometimes even expensive inlays of precious materials. They can have different types of locks (electronic, biometric) and any capacity of rotomats. Their choice is usually dictated by the size of the collection and... the interior design of the owner's study (as such safes are not likely to be hidden behind a painting).
