Separated from the rest of the house by a vault door, a "safe room" can be used as a safe for storing, for example, unique works of art or as a last resort during a robbery. It is worth remembering that in the event of a burglary, it is an unbreakable place, even if other safeguards fail.
Safe asylum
There are a number of forms of burglary protection available on the market today. Typically, therefore, the larger the property, the more we focus and invest money in protecting it. However, the expense does not always equal the effectiveness. In the case of a separate safe room you can be sure that a potential attacker will not be able to get into it. When is it worth thinking about such a solution? When you have considerable property and are in possession of valuable, unique items, the theft of which will expose you to huge financial losses, or there is a real risk of robbery, which may endanger your loved ones. In the first case, we are talking about a safe room, and in the second about a so-called panic room, where you can take refuge in case of danger. Let's focus on the first variant first.

What is a safe room?
It can be prepared in two ways. At the stage of house construction, a room planned for this purpose may be cast in reinforced concrete and the entrance to it secured with an armoured door. Another method is to separate a room from an existing interior, e.g. a dressing room, a storeroom or a cellar, using special interconnected panels and inserting a vault door. The advantage of the second method is that it can be installed at any time, later dismantled and moved to another place. This type of asylum is virtually impossible to break through for attackers. The walls can withstand an attack with a heavy hammer or even gunfire. For complete protection, you can also invest in armoured blast doors. These are made of steel and reinforced concrete and will not even succumb to the detonation of a charge weighing around 775 kg of TNT.
An impregnable fortress
This type of door is equipped with an electronic lock with PIN code and two emergency mechanical locks. Importantly, they can be opened from both the outside and the inside. They close automatically 10 seconds after opening. In addition to the advanced locking system, it is worth connecting the safe room to the building's alarm network and equipping it with a "silent alarm" function, which notifies the relevant services of a robbery if the armoured door is opened. This not only increases security, but also makes it possible to store items with a higher value than can be deposited under current regulations.

A home-made shelter?
If we additionally want the room to function as a panic room, we need to think carefully about its equipment. This is because it is supposed to be a place where we can safely wait until the appropriate services arrive in case of an attack. The location of such a room will be crucial - the closer to the bedroom the better. We should also take care of the air supply, i.e. ventilation with filters, and placing a fire extinguisher in it. It is worth remembering, however, that along with the implementation of this type of investment, the habits of all household members should be changed and care should be taken to ensure discretion. No security measures will be effective if windows are left open at night and the alarm is not armed.
Preparing a safe room certainly requires financial outlays and good planning, but it can provide peace of mind for years to come.
